Topic Proposal

I chose my Chaco sandals, outdoor sandals, as my text. They have a stigma of being active, hippy, sometimes trendy shoes depending on the wearer. The purpose of the text is to protect your feet, wear outdoors, and be versatile. The shoes say a lot about the type of person who would wear them. It would be typical that the message would be something along the lines of, this person enjoys the outdoors, understands the importance of sturdy shoe and at the same time, is up to date with fashion and the latest trends. The distinctive design of the brand makes it very easy to recognize. Also the labeling of the brand in a very noticeable location adds features worthy of noting. The words of the shoes makes them official, the design makes them recognizable, the color (which is one of about 25 different varieties) was specified to my own liking. All of these elements create a brand that is known and appreciated by many walks of life. I think the intended audience of the text is outdoor enthusiasts, but at the same time, people looking to portray a certain image concerning the environment would also be considered as part of the targeted audience.
Thesis:
Something as simple as shoes can portray a complex image; Chaco’s are not only worn by outdoor enthusiasts but by many types of people who see them as an image molder versus a functional shoe.

Good idea with choosing Chacos. I love the sandals and think they are very comfortable. Many people have Chaco sandals that actually do not use them for anything but walking from one building to another. The "outdoorsy" cliche was popular in my highschool. Almost everyone sported an expensive, NorthFace jacket specifically made for camping. I assure you, none of these owners ever went camping. I think you can analyze this topic extensively.

Christina, this is a thorough topic proposal. You have chosen a good object for analysis and you have obviously considered both the actual detail and how one could interpret them. The details you picked to prove that these sandals allow versatility and comfort are good, but you need to be more specific about the pair you own. What color is it? Where exactly is the brand label on your pair? How long have you owned them? How often do you wear them: every day, only outdoors, or rarely, when you need to look stylish? If “outdoorsy” sandals become a staple of style among young people in America, what does it tell us about the lifestyle and values of our young people? Also, is there a balance of price, quality, and looks? Basically, are they popular because of the brand, the looks, or the quality? Would they last a few years? Do you need to break them in? Are the people wearing them the conforming or rebelling fashionistas?

I like the way you said the sandals are both versatile for the outdoors, but at the same time recognizable and stylish as far as fashion goes. I think this text can go far and it seems you've got the idea about the message conveyed through the design.
